Best choice for free machining aluminum?May 17, 2011 · I don't think the actual alloy matters that much for machining. The biggest factor is the heat treatment. Aluminum with a T-6 temper will be much easier to machine than a gummy untreated version. I mostly work with cast aluminum (356). I have had good luck with plain old 6061 though.
