Nov 25, 2009 · Im not the expert. Years ago I was making some parts out of 4140. And asked my heat treater (in house guy) about the range of HT for 4140. I was told that he could do around 52 RC. But at that hardness the Part is susceptible to cracking. He recommended around 45 RC max. 4140 and 4340 are probably close. Its not a case type of steel.
